A Book?! Yes, a Book!

 Buy Now!

What? I illustrated a book?! Yup I did! It has always been dream of mine to write and illustrate children's books. I am kind of obsessed with them, I have a large collection of children's literature in my own personal library, because I believe books are part of what shapes little people, and whenever I can, it is an honour to give books, to read books, and now to illustrate books.

It all started one day when a new girl showed up in my Vietnamese language class, we were all introducing ourselves and I said I was an designer, artist, illustrator, graphics whatever (I still don't know what to call myself) generally I verbally spew whatever word comes up first, and then keep adding to it- which gets me in trouble sometimes, because then people assume I can do whatever they need- and if it comes to art, usually I can... but I don't always want too, and I often just say, "oh wow that sounds like an awesome project, I hope you find the right person to work on it with you... I don't think it's for me".

I'm always quite leery of who I work with, and what I get myself into, I don't like to be tied down, and I am very particular with whom I share my creativity with. (I've had lots of experience working with creativity draining people...and whomp, whomp, whomp... it kinda kills you a slow death...)

But this day, Christina introduced herself as a Children's book writer, and then she pipes up "Do you want to illustrate my new book" and I said "yes". That yes so easily rolled off my tongue, it surprised me.  But as you know my word for the year was Trust... and I knew that I needed to walk through whatever doors opened... and apparently this one had just opened. I honestly figured at some point we'd laugh about it, and she'd move on and find someone else. She didn't.

And so the rest is history, and we've created a beautiful book, that resonates with me, because it is all about my Husband's birth place, we don't have children of our own to share it with (you can read more about that all throughout my blog, or get the gist on the about me page- which is literally, about me). This book is a fun story of two children who travel... this time to Vietnam and see the sights, experience weird food, and have a blast while doing it.

I'm really excited to introduce you to Aya and Bobby a brother and sister who discover the sights and sound of foreign lands. You can check out their story and read about Vietnam and Thailand here. (more countries, cities, and sights are in the works!)

And if you'd like to purchase your own copy of this very special book, you can do that through Amazon. I am super proud of the work Christina and I have done,  and I cannot wait for you to read it!  If you read it and love be sure to leave an amazon review for me!

I've learned a couple of things...

We've been in Vietnam for just over 6 weeks, and life is slowly taking shape and becoming normal. While we've been here, I've learned a couple of things, I know for sure this list will keep growing... but in the mean time here are a few things I've learned:

1. If you see it- buy it now it won't be there when you want/need it.

2. There are three prices in Vietnam: the one it's worth, the one you pay, and the one everyone else pays.

3. Even though the sun is shining outside it can still be raining in your heart.

4. Home is only a phone call away.

5. Nobody can replace the person you are missing -no matter how hard you try, on any day, anywhere.

6. Learning the Vietnamese language is very very difficult. Not knowing the Vietnamese language is very isolating.

7. You can open a can with a Leatherman. Which has taught me that I won't starve.

8. If you're not Vietnamese you probably won't find clothes to fit anywhere other then "the Russian market". I still haven't been to this oasis of clothing yet!

9. Nothing warms the heart like finding a little tiny piece of home.

10. Nothing lasts forever, the feelings you're feelings will pass-the time will pass and you'll eventually be back home and all of this will just be fond memories.

And bonus, because this one I know- but I've relearned it more times since I've been here, than I'd like to admit :) Tomorrow you will laugh at what you cried over yesterday...

So I guess the lessons I've learned is that just take it one day at a time... and enjoy the ride. This. Is. Life.

Coffee.

I've got a little secret for you...
Coffee is my best friend, and croissants are a close second.

We've been in Vietnam now for just about 3 weeks, Vietnam is one of the worlds largest producers of coffee and I would admit, a ca phe sua da is absolutely delicious, but finding a simple black cup of coffee is proving to be difficult. Even more difficult than that, because if you know me, you know I don't leave the country without a kilo of my favourite kicking horse 454 horsepower coffee in tow, is finding a grinder. I've got coffee, I just can't find a grinder, nor a french press... But fear not, I am on the hunt.

But what I did find was a Starbucks, I know, I know some people would argue Starbucks coffee is not great coffee, and I'd be one of you whilst standing in my kitchen grinding my own beans, brewing a big pot of my favourite 454 horsepower in a french press, then sipping it out of my favourite mug- but here, far away from home, far from my grinder, far from my simple comforts (that I perhaps took for granted) Starbucks was an oasis in a the coffee desert for me.

So I picked up a pound of dark roast, and made myself a cup of coffee, (albeit in a Vietnamese metal coffee filter)- but I had a the first cup i've enjoyed at home since we've been here.

And what I realized is that, I love coffee a lot, and the simple things in life bring great pleasure and satisfaction, so don't take them for granted. Instead be grateful for all of the little things we do every single day that make us feel happy... Life is made of of simple little pleasures, take time to notice them!

Update from the other side!

Good morning... well it's afternoon here and I am currently working away on my Etsy shop, sitting in the middle of my new living room, right smack in front of the tv, with animal planet playing 35 inches from my face... I know, glamorous right?

You'd think being on the other side of the world in a new country I'd be out exploring and doing all the stuff you've got to do in a country before you leave. I hear that, I get it... but I also know I am not on vacation... I'm still working... just from new digs.

So far I'm loving it here, the people, the heat, the food... I may have had the best croissant of my life the other night. The owner of the bakery where I buy our bread, gave me one to try. And since that day I've tried very hard not to buy one every time I go in... so far I've been successful. Not sure if I have the will power when I head over today... it's one of those days and just so you know how I'm feeling, I've made this sweet little print...
